Effects of this bill
If this bill passes, it means that:
Penalty amounts increase for people who threaten, abuse, hinder, or obstruct authorised officers in State forests.
Authorised officers can seize items if they reasonably believe a person is about to commit an offence or that the item will be used to commit one.
The maximum penalty increases for people who refuse or fail to provide their name and address to an authorised officer.
A strict liability offence is created for taking timber from a State forest for commercial sale or processing without authorisation.
People who provide false information or fail to comply with a production notice face fines of up to 20 penalty units for individuals and 100 penalty units for companies.
Authorised officers may apply to the Magistrates' Court for an order to compel a person to produce documents relevant to the Forests Act 1958.
