Effects of this bill

If this bill passes, it means that:

The State must reach net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2045 instead of 2050.
The State is required to meet specific interim greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets between 2021 and 2035.
The Premier and Minister must set emissions reduction targets for the periods 2036-2040 and 2041-2045 by the specified deadlines in 2028 and 2033.
The Premier and Minister face tighter restrictions on their power to amend interim emissions reduction targets in exceptional circumstances.
The Minister or relevant Council must provide greenhouse gas emissions reduction statements by 31 October every fifth year until 2040.
Planning authorities must consider emissions targets and climate change risks when preparing planning schemes or amendments.
The Minister for Planning can issue written directions to planning authorities on how to handle climate change factors in planning schemes.
The target for electricity generated from renewable energy sources in Victoria increases to 65% by 2030 and 95% by 2035.
