Effects of this bill

If this bill passes, it means that:

Only the Director of Public Prosecutions or a police officer may commence a prosecution for offences against section 195N(1) or 195O(1) of the Crimes Act 1958.
A police officer must obtain consent from the Director of Public Prosecutions to prosecute a person under 18 for these specific offences.
These prosecution requirements apply regardless of when the alleged offence was committed.
The Crimes Amendment Act 2026 is repealed on the first anniversary of its commencement.
